The Book

The Book

Inspired by his meeting with Ray C. Anderson of Interface Inc on February 28th 2006 who with vision of how he might bring about change, Ray set out a model within his book ‘Mid-Course Correction’. Towards a sustainable enterprise: The Interface Model. On that sunny Atlanta morning Ray penned a copy of his book ‘To Bob Williamson comrade- in – arms for the good of Earth, with respect and best wishes Ray C. Anderson 2/28/06’. As they talked about the changes needed a bond of joint commitment was formed. It was at Ray’s suggestion that morning on the 20th floor of the Outlook Building that the book – ‘ZERO Greenhouse Emissions - The Day The Lights Went Out - Our Future World’ came to be a future project for Bob.

"I’m not sure it was quite what Ray had in mind, but it builds on the message for change in a way that many may find easier to understand. Much of what has been written surrounding resource depletion and the ways that we often miss the point about how are actions can have far reaching outcomes, is lost to us. We have lived with consumption and to a great extent have been encouraged by Industry and the Industrial systems in place in the developed world to keep consuming. What has taken 4.5 billion years to accumulate as finite resources to be used and shared in a sustainable manner by past, present and future generations; evenly shared, has been brought to the edge of extinction in a mere 150 years or so. The book ‘ZERO Greenhouse Emissions - The Day The Lights Went Out - Our Future World’ asks us many questions as to how we wish to shape our future. For You and Yours, for me and mine, and for them and theirs. We know our past with 20/20 hindsight of which is said, we can be wise. We can see our future with 20/20 foresight. Shall we be wise?"

The Book

The chapter ‘Designed for Demise’ puts into question the model we have chosen that has us on a free fall course with no soft landing.

The book takes a logical look at what Science calls the ‘best available science’ and puts climate change, Global Warming and mans past, present and future into plain language.

Although a cautionary tale it takes us on a journey of hindsight and foresight.

Chapter 7 takes a look at the economic dominos that may be tipped if our chosen path continues. As Ray would say we need a ‘Mid-Course Correction’.

We hear that Mother Nature has heard of our deposits of CO2 into the atmospheric ‘Sky Bank’ and while her past strategy throughout millennia has been to keep her investment portfolio of carbon, methane and other deposits tucked safely away in jars at the bottom of her garden, would now like to place a few strategic long term investments of her own. – Tipping points, positive feedbacks.

The Book

We hear from the world’s environmentalists and the Union of Concerned Scientist in chapter 8 whose voices are at odds with the economic realities of our industrial and political preoccupation for protection of GDP and continual economic growth and of globally isolated national self interests.

Eventually Mother Natures ‘Super Salesman’ turns up and this is how he puts it.

"Picture this for a moment." he offered "The world on which we live as a room with no doors or windows, nowhere to go but where we all are. In the middle of that room smoulders a small fire, gradually filling the room with smoke. Do you put it out or perish?" He was a straight forward sort, although he could be a little cynical and insensitive at times. For those present who were undecided as to the answer to his question he suggested a small journey of enlightenment from Genesis to Revelations but avoiding Exit-us. His final question was simple “How would you like some of these environmental impacts, on sale right now. In fact they are free for all and we can deliver them directly to everyone’s door?" When his sales presentation was concluded, he got the answer he was looking for: "No Thanks!"

His presentation and journey to enlightenment came with some outstanding features of the “once in a lifetime deal.” The Worlds Closing Down Sale was to be a real fire sale and the only feature not to be included would be air conditioning. “But to compensate,” he said, “we are including a really superior heater with an automatic timer. A bit like a good vindaloo curry” he suggested, "the longer you leave it the hotter it gets".

The book is a ‘call to arms for the good of earth’ It is after all our choice.
